The show made their first attempt at tackling the taboo topic of homosexuality in 1983. Tricia Pursley portrayed the divorced Devon McFadden, who believes she is falling in love with her psychiatrist, Lynn Carson (portrayed by Donna Pescow). Lynn admits to being a lesbian, and Devon admits her crush. No other American soap opera had done a story about homosexuality.
|
Nixon decided to write a story that would rejuvenate the show and be socially relevant at the same time. This resulted in the series revealing Erica's daughter Bianca as a lesbian. Within the series, Bianca admits the truth to her mother in December 2000. Though initially controversial, the storyline was praised by fans and critics. Bianca emerged as a breakout character and lesbian icon. The show found additional success in the pairing of newcomers Leo and Greenlee (Josh Duhamel and Rebecca Budig)

In season 4 Dr. Callie Torres and Dr. Erica Hahn dance around an obvious attraction. Dr. Erica Hahn is presumably a lesbian and Dr. Callie Torres graples with her attraction to her. There are some cute moments of apiphinies for Torres, but all the excitment is rudely interupted with the contravoursy that Dr. Erica Hahn is not going to be continued in the story line.
|
In the following seasons Callie doesnt shed her lesbian ways when she meets and falls in love with Dr. Arizona Robbins. The dance is adorable, but the story line finds them together in the end

Barr's real-life brother and sister are gay, which is what inspired her to push for introducing gay characters and issues into the show, and was part of the reason for her fallout with former executive producer Matt Williams as the latter protested in making the character Jackie a lesbian. "My show seeks to portray various slices of real life, and homosexuals are a reality." Obviously this was not a battle that Barr won, but threw the shows entire creation Barr introduced numerous lesbian characters and lesbian plot lines. As well as having lesbian women such as Ellen Degenerous on as guest characters. In the series finale Jackie was revealed as being a lesbian. But not plot line supported this reveal. |
Jackie and Roseanne each get a check for $10,000 from Bev after she and their father divorce. They, along with Nancy, decide to open a diner, but can only get the money they need after Bev agrees to become a partner as well. Nancy comes out as a lesbian. |
